Fantastic Poway Braces Finishes

These are the beginning photos for a young lady who recently had her braces finished by Dr Thomas & we’re so proud of her (above blog shows how she finished)! She came to us after having had a few years of braces elsewhere and was unsure as to what to expect with a new office.

After our exam, and detailed conversations, Poway braces / Dr Thomas arrived at a non surgery and non extraction treatment plan that included more recent advanced technology. With the use of this technology, and using the Damon system of braces, she ended up with this absolutely beautiful result - see our next blog for her final results!

When we do your braces, its not only just to have straight teeth, but also to enhance your smile to the fullest extent possible. This patient's final result would typically require jaw surgery to both widen her arches and to correct and close her open bite (front teeth separated)

What this means in everyday terms is that your teeth must match the outline of your lips, showing just enough gums, but not too much, make sure your smile is broad and wide so you do not have dark area's on the sides when you smile, and that your teeth are NOT brought back too far in your face. We not only care about what you look like today, but also when your 40, 50, and 60! If your teeth are brought back too far, either with headgear or extensive extractions of teeth, its possible your face can prematurely age. Dr Thomas carefully evaluates your smile, profile, position of your teeth in your face, to make sure they are in the best position possible for your face over the lifetime of your smile.

Our Poway and EastLake Orthodontic offices use approaches that minimize moving your teeth back, unless you cannot close your lips easily. One of the main reason's Dr Thomas chooses to have permanent teeth removed is to enable his patients to comfortably close their lips together without having to strain to close their mouth and lips. If your teeth are so far forward that you cannot close your lips comfortably, then it makes sense to bring the front teeth back, often requiring extractions of permanent teeth in these specific situations.

Dr Thomas Visits Washington DC for Continuing Education

Did you know that Dr Thomas is heading to Washington DC to attend his annual American Association of Orthodontists meeting - he will attend 4 days of lectures - 8am to 5pm every day! We never stop learning do we?

Continuing Orthodontic Education

We are proud to announce our very own Scarlett Thomas has been invited to speak as a guest lecturer at the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists November 4th 2009! Its an honor to be invited to present material to Orthodontic Societies - Scarlett is no stranger to public speaking. In addition to her duties as Treatment Coordinator and Office Manager, Scarlett also runs a consulting business for Orthodontists - Orthodontic Management Solutions.

Over the last few years, Scarlett has been invited to speak to the American Association of Orthodontists, Damon Forum and the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists

Advanced Continuing Education

We are attending an Orthodontic convention / meeting for advanced continuing education in Phoenix Arizona! The orthodontic meeting is focused on learning about latest research findings we can use to directly help our patients. Dr Thomas is constantly attending the most up to date meetings & courses to learn about current research / findings to help his patients. A terrific lecture attended was on self ligation braces - which is exactly what we already use in our practice (Damon Braces)!

Braces & Chocolate Chip Cookies

Did you know it is totally fine to eat chocolate chip cookies with braces?? At Powaybraces we not only like the idea, we bake them fresh and hot right in our office for patients and their famies to enjoy. Like the idea, we love it! Add to that a refrigerator filled with ice cold water or milk, and you have yourself a terrific way to spend time at the orthodontist. Dr. Thomas creates an enviornment where braces, fun, and great food combine to make your visit with us as fun as possible!

Movie Night Dec 5th, 7pm!

PowayBraces.com is having a movie night on December 5th, 2009! A ticket will be given to the first 250 patients who come into our Poway office and pick up their movie ticket! We are renting our the theater for our own private screening of Jim Carry in 'A Christmas Carol'. Come spend the evening with us and enjoy this very funny and fun film.

How do Damon Braces Work?

The Damon System is not just a new product, it's a new way of treating orthodontic patients. Conventional treatment all too often requires removal of teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space. Although removal of teeth and the use of palatal expanders may be required, we have found their use is dramatically lowered with the Damon System. Another benefit is the elimination of elastic "rubber band" ties. While a mainstay of braces for years, their use greatly increases friction thereby slowing tooth movement - this directly increases the number of appointments required to correct a patients bite.

Damon passive self-ligating braces that eliminate the need for elastic or metal "ties". With Damon tie-less braces you can experience treatment without tightening.
